An exciting new art exhibition is being premiered at the Fundació Pilar i Joan Miró in Palma, Mallorca.

The works of two twentieth century art legends, Joan Miró and Josef Albers, who have never before been portrayed in conjunction with each other, have been put together in a unique exhibition entitled ‘The Thrill of Seeing’ which started on May 23rd and lasts right through to September 21st 2014.

Joan Miro

Miró and Albers – two world-renowned artists

Joan Miró (1893–1983) is something of a legend in Majorca. Although born in Barcelona, both his mother and his wife were Mallorcan and he had a deep love for the island throughout his life. His paintings of bright colour and wild squiggles have become renowned throughout the world.

Miró was initially involved with the Surrealists in Paris in the 1920s and became a friend and contemporary of Picasso. He moved to Mallorca in 1957, and died here at the age of 90 in 1983. The interior of his studio has been left virtually undisturbed since he last created his artistic works here and is a fascinating place to visit.

Josef Albers (1888-1976) was born in Germany and emigrated to the United States in 1933 where he made his name. He was the first living artist to have a retrospective exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

The Fundació in Palma (971 701 420 miro.palmademallorca.es), named after Joan Miró and his wife Pilar, was the late artist’s purpose-built studio and living space for much of the 1950s, 60s and 70s. Just off the main Ma-1C road through Cala Major on the western side of Palma, it is open to the public throughout the year.

A vibrant display of art

You don’t have to be an art expert or even art lover to enjoy The Thrill of Seeing exhibition. Just come along and enjoy a vibrant selection of works that include internationally-famous masterpieces by both artists as well as rarely-seen pieces.

The show combines Miró’s paintings, drawings, and sculpture with Albers’s paintings, prints, and glass work. The result reveals amazing visual and spiritual similarities.

In fact it’s fascinating to see how both Miró and Albers shared so much in their artistic vision and use of colour and form, even though working independently of each other on different continents.

The sheer joy of being alive!

Its as if they were both exclaiming ‘seeing is a miracle; being alive is joyful!’ Their sheer love for life (even they both lived through some very dark times historically) is absolutely infectious to the visitor to the Palma exhibition.

There is no doubt that Miró and Albers were both outstanding painters and sculptors. We at Balearic Properties will most certainly be paying a visit to the Fundació de Pilar i Joan Miró in Palma to see this unique exhibition. Why don’t you come and join us!

‘The Thrill of Seeing’, Fundació Pilar i Joan Miró, Palma, runs from 23 May to 21 September 2014.
