This villa is not what it seems to be. It’s even better. Let me explain. If we look at its façade we get the immediate impression that this is an old country villa which has been reformed. The type of construction, the masonry, the gable roof, the carob trees in the garden, and even to brilliantly blue sky, all elements position us in the Mediterranean. Well, nothing ancient but a lot of the Mediterranean. Let me tell you the story. The owner, an Englishman in love with the countryside and the sun, bought land full of carob trees in Mallorca’s centre and liked both this location near to Palma and the sea, that inspired him to build a house right there following the traditional technique, so that it would appear to have been there forever. The result has been a success. The sensation is the search and the reality is that, finished in 2010, the villa is equipped with all the technical elements that ensure convenience and comfort, these are not just minor things when you live in the countryside.
The material and techniques create a stunning effect
To summarize: the success was mainly due to the faith in traditional architecture and the use of local techniques. And this we have already seen from the outside. Inside, flagstones from Binissalem cover the floor thus unifying all spaces. In the ceilings wooden beams fulfill this function with different finishes (darker, light and luminous), also emphasizing the rustic character of the building. Two aspects (ceiling and floor) must always be kept in mind. These are rounded off by an essential third aspect, the walls. In this case they give the finishing touch, by being painted in raw or soft cream colors, or as you like to call the color that blends from white into beige. So much for the most basic, decorative elements.
