Whether it’s Michelin star haute cuisine, traditional Spanish dishes such as paella, tasty tapas or a hot curry, the Majorcan capital of Palma de Mallorca is one of the best places to eat in the whole of Europe.
So let’s have a taster of some of the splendid choices on offer right now in the beautiful city of Palma.
Marc Fosh
We may as well start at the top. British chef Marc Fosh has really made a name for himself in Mallorca, helping to put the island well on the map of fine dining locations. His restaurant, simply called Marc Fosh, is situated in a converted 17th century monastery in the old town of Palma. The restaurant is Michelin-starred and specialises in superb Mediterranean cuisine using seasonal ingredients. Well worth saving up for a special occasion.

Sa Cranca
A traditional ‘Arrocaria’ (rice speciality restaurant) situated on Palma’s Paseo Maritimo seafront. Sa Cranca’s popularity is, not surprisingly, due its traditional paella. The food’s great but the views overlooking Palma Marina are out of this world!

Bolixe
This small but perfectly formed restaurant is one of Palma’s secret gems. Situated slightly off the beaten track away from the city’s tourist traps, Asador Bolixe specialises in steaks – which are absolutely fabulous. The cooking is Argentina meets Mallorca and their lunchtime menu del dia (which changes daily) with three delicious courses plus a drink and bread for €11.50 is possibly the best deal in Palma. Chic modern decor and friendly staff.

Casa Gallega
Get there early if you want to enjoy the delicious food at Casa Gallega, because as soon as the doors open at 1pm, the queues begin to form. You can choose to pick from the tasty tapas menu, enjoy the daily changing menu del dia, or sit down for a more leisurely meal in the large dining room. Whatever you decide on, you will return again and again to this restaurant situated just a few minute’s walk from Plaza Espana. Fast, efficient service from the English-speaking staff.

Restaurante Toque
The cooking at this Belgian owned restaurant is superb. It’s been going for quite a while but has never lost its cachet amongst discerning diners. Run by a father and son team, the food is great with a menu del dia and an excellent a la carte choice. There is an extensive wine list to choose from. Also there can’t be many restaurants in Majorca that offer an amazing selection of Belgian beers!

Basmati
Regarded by many as the best Indian restaurant in Majorca. The head chef/owner always comes to explain the menu and you can feel his passion. It’s usually a set menu but don’t let that put you off – the food is delicious and even includes spices such as tamarind grown in the owner’s home garden. The decor is amazingly exotic with some fabulous objects from the Indian sub continent.

Peix Vermel
Peix Vermal is the posh place to go if you love good quality fish. Situated in a delightful arched cellar in one of the lovely narrow streets of Palma old town, dining here is a real pleasure. Understated decor, crisp linen tablecloths, a good wine selection and attentive staff who look after you well. Give Peix a chance!

Wine Industry
Not the most glamorous name for a restaurant for sure, but lovers of good food and good wine will love ‘Vinoteca y Picoteo’ Wine Industry, situated in the foodie paradise that is Santa Catalina. It’s a great way to discover Mallorcan wines which are becoming more and more popular worldwide.
The variety of tapas on offer come highly recommended.

Mercat de l’Olivar
Not a restaurant as such, but a fresh food market with some of the best local produce on offer in the whole of Majorca. Here you’ll find many bustling food stalls, bars and restaurants selling freshly prepared dishes such as calamares, oysters, sushi, rabbit, wines and liquors. Mercat de l’Olivar is a ‘must do’ experience when in Palma.

A Ma Maison
This review wouldn’t be complete without mentioning A Ma Maison, a quirky little Tunisian restaurant in Palma’s Santa Catalina district. Run by a charming lady named Saloua, the food is fresh and lovingly prepared with no use of a microwave. As the title suggests, you are actually dining in the chef/owner’s house. Her simple philosophy is that everyone should have a good time with good food and fantastic wine. Let’s drink to that!
