Rain in sunny Mallorca? Surely not! Yet, due to Mallorca’s fascinating micro climate and the need to keep the island’s water supply at a sustainable level, it does occasionally rain and many residents are grateful for it.

The good news is the rain doesn’t usually last long, and once gone, Mallorca does look rather beautiful and green afterwards.

So, what to do on a rainy day in Mallorca? Well, whether you own a property in Mallorca or just love to visit this lovely island, here are some interesting activities you could enjoy when the beach is out of bounds.

Palma Aquarium
Palma Aquarium Mallorca

With over 700 different species of marine life to be seen, there’s plenty for both adults and children to enjoy at Palma Aquarium. There’s also a play area for the kids, the largest roof garden in Spain (‘The Jungle’) which creates a mini tropical rain forest, beautiful Mediterranean gardens and the deepest shark tank in Europe. Wow!

Go to the movies!
Marratxi Mallorca Festival Park

Mallorca has some fabulous cinemas, many showing films in English. These include Cine Cuitat and Ocimax in Palma, Centro Commercial in Porto Pi and also Festival Park on the Palma-Inca road. It’s a great way to pass a rainy afternoon in Mallorca and you even get to see many new releases weeks before they appear in the UK! In the listings, if you see VOS or VOSE, this means the films are in English.

Pamper yourself

If you can’t lie on the beach, why not spoil yourself in a day spa? Fortunately there are so many luxurious spas in Mallorca where you can enjoy a massage, benefit from some beauty treatments, relax in the Jacuzzi, sauna or steam room and go for a swim in the indoor pool. Perfect for lazy rainy days.

For Culture Vultures
Fundacion Pilar i Joan Miro Palma Mallorca

Mallorca really does excel in cultural activities. Museums and art galleries abound and there are even several historic castles you can visit! Whether it’s the Fundacion Pilar i Joan Miro (the museum dedicated to surrealist painter Joan Miro), Es Baluard museum of modern art, the interesting Museo de Mallorca, historic Castell Bellver or the absolutely must-see La Seu, Palma’s magnificent gothic cathedral, you are never short of fascinating places to visit on a rainy day.

Tantalize your tastebuds

With some of the best restaurants in the Mediterranean – most of them being highly affordable – going for a slap-up meal in Mallorca is the perfect indoor activity for a rainy day. Whether it’s traditional Mallorcan cooking, sumptuous seafood specialities, a great value ‘menu del dia’ or dining out at one of the island’s nine swish Michelin-starred restaurants, you can’t lose!

And don’t forget the shopping!

Palma has some of the finest shops in the Mediterranean. Chic designer boutiques, famous-name department stores, traditional Mallorcan handicrafts…you really are spoilt for choice. The main shopping areas in Palma tend to be around Avinguda Jaume III and the Passeig des Born, but many of the island’s smaller towns also offer superb shopping opportunities. And don’t forget the recently opened FAN Mallorca, a shopping destination par excellence!
