Good news is in short supply from British Airways as its cabin crew threaten to strike, but the announcement of new flights from London City airport to three Spanish cities marks the airline’s first leisure flights from the Docklands airport.

From this month BA is operating a year-round service to Barcelona, and from May will fly three times a week to Mallorca and Ibiza.

“Also, there is a growing population living and working in the city of London who want to take time off at the weekends. With just two hours 15 minutes flying time to the Balearics and a minimum check-in time of 15 minutes at London City, it maximises travellers’ personal time.”

This minimum check-in time and the airport’s location three miles from Canary Wharf, and six miles from the City, has helped the airport become a firm favourite with commuters across Europe. However, an increased number of flights, to 30 destinations including New York, and tightened security means travellers at peak times have faced long delays.

Passengers should find the process easier after two new security lanes were opened last week, bringing the total to six. In addition, the airport is spending £7 million reconfiguring the departure lounge. Work has begun and is set to finish by the end of the year.
