Location
Campos, Mallorca

Campos is a Mallorcan municipality as well as a county town in its own right. The municipality of Campos centres around the town of the same name and also includes two popular tourist beach resorts: Sa Rapita and Ses Covetes.

The municipality borders on four other of Mallorca's municipalities: Santanyi, Felanitx, Ses Salines, Llucmajor and Porreres.

This delightful corner of the island is the ideal place to sample the splendour of the gentle Mallorcan countryside whilst also having access to some lovely beaches.

Interestingly, the town of Campos tends to attract the independant traveller more than the package tourist. The result is that you can enjoy the town at a leisurely pace without being overrun by visitors.

A little history

Campos is one of those lovely sleepy old Mallorcan towns which is much evidenced in its traditional stone buildings and winding narrow streets. The town was founded by King Jaume II and the earliest records date back to 1300 AD. However, there is evidence of both Roman and Saracen settlements in the area well before then.

History buffs on a visit to the town will be sure to visit the church of Sant Julia. Here one will find a famous painting of Jesus Christ by the Spanish artist Bartole Estaban Murillo.

Sant Julia also welcomes Campos's first fiesta of the year which takes place on the 9th January. This is mainly a religous affair centred around the church.

Interesting artefacts can also be seen at the Sister Mary Rafela Museum in the town.

Major attractions in Campos

The small town of Campos provides two major attractions: one a church, the other a patisserie! As mentioned before, the imposing 19th century Sant Julia church is well worth a visit when in town.

But another 'must do' has to be the famous bakery of Patisserie Pomar. With mouthwatering delicacies such Mallorca's celebrated 'ensaimada' pastry, mouthwatering artisan chocolates and the sugary almond bomb known as 'savarin', it's little wonder that this patisserie is regarded as the finest in the whole of the island. Now, who could resist that!

Campos also has its fair share of fiestas. The town's main fiesta takes place in the summer commerating the Lady of August. Here local people really get involved and a range of sporting and leisure activities can be enjoyed.

Acknowledging Campos's strong agricultural traditions another fiesta, the Feria Ramadera, takes place annually. This is in order to judge Mallorca's best Fresian cow, a reference to the area's reputation for quality dairy produce.

While we're on the theme of agriculture, Campos hosts a twice-weekly market every Thursday and Saturday. It's a great way to sample some of the superb fruit and produce from Mallorca's fertile interior.

But that's not all. Campos features a harvest fair in October, and a unique fiesta celebrating all things 'Sobrasada' - a type of chorizo-like pork sausage very popular in Mallorca.

On the subject of food, Campos is also rather famous for its 'Piris' cheese. The cheese is matured in brine and paprika for some months before being ripe enough to eat. It may sound a little strange, but rest assured it's delicious!

It's true to say that the main attractions of Campos lie outside the town but still within the municipality. In fact, there is some magnificent countryside to be enjoyed around Campos including mountains, coastline, national parks, forests and mountains.

The Campos area is also renowned for its long, almost deserted beaches: a far cry from the tourist-packed beaches of Mallorca's south west. The most famous beach is Es Trenc. Comprising an impressive 3-kilometre stretch of fine white sand and gentle lapping turquoise waters, it is stunningly beautiful.

Apart from a few 'Chiringuitos' (beach bars) and the odd nudist sunbather, Es Trenc is largely unspoilt. The beach also acts as a channel to the lovely wetlands reserve of Es Salobar, Mallorca's second largest nature reserve.

Around Campos

The nearest major town to Campos is Lllucmajor, a market town with a gorgeous main square that boasts many restaurants and bars. Rural villages such as Porreres, Felanitx and Santanyi are also nearby and well worth a visit. Close by too, are two wine producing towns - Son Mesquida and Son Negre.

And don't forget some of the loveliest and quietest beaches in Mallorca lie on this coastline. So if sailing and watersports are your thing, it's a beautiful area to be able to indulge your holiday leisure activities far away from the madding crowd.
